In 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army was defeated at Culloden, extinguishing hopes of regaining the British throne. The end of the Jacobite uprising caused a commotion in York, as many prominent York socialites, secretly supported the Catholic claim to the throne. Several Lord Mayors held Jacobite sympathies, and covert meetings took place in the Secret Room.
Hundreds of Jacobites were captured after the battle resulting in 22 executions. With so many hanged men, is it any wonder that some of those ghosts made their way to York Mansion House, which had been the heart of York’s Jacobite plotters?
